Espada #1
Stark
Stark (スターク ,Sutāku?) is the Primera Espada, signified by the "1" tattooed on the back of his left hand. Stark has an overall lazy and laid back personality as he is seen sleeping when the Espada learn of Aaroniero Arruruerie's death, and does not appear overly concerned by the news. Lilinette (リリネット ,Ririnetto?), his young female fracción, typically shows the concern that Stark does not.[11] When he is shown to be serious, however, his personality changes completely; he comes off as reluctant but nonetheless willing to do what needs to be done to complete the task at hand. He also appears to be uninterested in fighting, going as far as to suggest that he and Shunsui Kyōraku pretend to fight until everyone else is finished. The remains of Stark's hollow remnant consist of a bottom jaw that is positioned like a necklace and his hollow hole is on his sternum, right below the tip of his mask. While his combat abilities have not been shown, he is at the least very fast, as he easily manages to kidnap Orihime Inoue while Kenpachi Zaraki and Ichigo Kurosaki are only a few feet away.[12] His laziness also manifests itself in his fighting style, as he refuses to fight Shunsui Kyōraku at full strength when asked to. Just the same he shows himself to be a very capable fighter, observing that Kyōraku is ambidextrous and is trying to correct the speed of his swing to hide that fact.[13]

Shiba Kaien
-Older brother of Kuukaku and Ganju
-Zanpakutou's name was Nejibana
-Married to the 3rd seated officer of the 13th Division; she was killed by a Hollow during a recognizance mission
-Kaien, Rukia, and Captain Ukitake went after the Hollow that had killed Kaien's wife, but Kaien fought it on his own; the Hollow attacked and took over Kaien's body, inhabiting it; Ukitake was forced to fight the Hollow even though it was in Kaien's body, but it was ultimately Rukia who killed him
-Before he died, Kaien thanked Rukia, and Rukia still feels guilty about it because she doesn't think she did anything to deserve thanks

Ukitake Jyuushiro
-Zanpakutou's name is Sougyo no Kotowari; twin-bladed zanpakutou, one of only two in all of Soul Society, Kyouraku possesses the other
-Was under the tutelage of Yamamoto, who taught both Ukitake and Kyouraku to expand their powers and become undefeatable
-Has an illness that keeps him incapacitated most of the time
-After destroying the Soukyoku with instruments from the Shihouin family to stop Rukia's execution, he fought alongside Kyouraku against Yamamoto, even though Yamamoto had been their teacher; Yamamoto told them that they made him sick for what they did; their fight came to an inconclusive end once Aizen's conspiracy was revealed
-Taught Rukia that their are two kinds of battles; battles to protect life and battles to protect pride; he held her back from saving Kaien because his was a battle of pride

Kurotsuchi Nemu
-"Daughter" of Kurotsuchi Mayuri; she was created by him
-Obeys whatever commands Mayuri gives her; if she fails she receives harsh punishments from him
-Her uniform is different than the others, she wears a short skirt instead of the usual pants
-Gives Ishida the antidote for Mayuri's poison as thanks that Ishida did not kill him
-Is quiet and seems kind; the opposite of her "father"
12th division captain
Kurotsuchi Mayuri
-2nd President of the Research Institute of Technology
-"Father" of Kurotsuchi Nemu, or rather, the one who created her
-Zanpakutou's name is Ashisogizisou (or Ashisogi Jizou) and it creates a poison that severs the neural connections that control the victims ability to move his arms and legs without affecting pain responses
-Has performed many experiments and studies (almost all assuredly unpleasant) on Quincies; the last Quincy he experiemented on was Ishida's grandfather
-Is cruel and heartless; thinks nothing of using his own subordinates as bombs or beating up Nemu when she is injured
-Has strange extentions/adaptions to his body; such as being able to extend his arm to a great length or pulling a blade out of his ear to use as a weapon
-Ban-kai is "Golden Ashisogizisou," it looks like a huge catepillar with a baby's head; it turns his blood into a deadly poisonous fog that spreads for 200 yards; he is not affected by it
-Ashisogizisou also has the ability to turn whatever it cuts into liquid; Mayuri uses this technique to run from his battle with Ishida

Kusajika Yachiru
-Very attached to Zaraki Kenpachi; usually literally, she enjoys riding around on his back
-Zaraki gave her the name Yachiru after the only person he ever cared about
-From the 79th district of North Rukongai; the 2nd most dangerous district
-Even though she was only a small child when she first met Zaraki, she was not afraid of him or of his sword, or that he had just killed a group of men
-Has a poor sense of direction, and yet Zaraki still lets her direct him usually
-Likes to give silly nicknames to people, but then sometimes forgets that she does so
-Very strong for her size; case in point, she is able to carry Zaraki after he is wounded

Zaraki Kenpachi
-Kenpachi is the name given to the member of the Gotei 13 who has killed the most enemies and won the most battles; it means "no matter how many times you cut him he will never fall"; he gave the name to himself
-Became captain of the 11th Division by killing the previous captain in a one-on-one battle, witnessed by 200 members of the 11th Division
-Does not know his zanpakutou's name
-Only captain that has not achieved ban-kai
-Wears bells on the tips of his hair to give his opponent an advantage
-Wears the eyepatch for the same reason, although, it serves a dual purpose in that it both restricts his vision and is made out of a creature that consumes his excess spiritual energy
-Says that he named Yachiru after the only person that he ever cared about
-From the 80th district of North Rukongai; the 80th district is the most chaotic and dangerous district
-Called "Ken-chan" by Yachiru

Matsumoto Rangiku
-Zanpakutou's name is Haineko
-Knew Ichimaru Gin from when they were children; he found her having collapsed from hunger and offered her food
-Has formed some kind of attachment to Orihime; she wants to sleep over at her house, wants to take a bath with her, and even likes Orihime's strange cooking
10th division captain
Hitsugaya Toushirou
-Zanpakutou's name is Hyourinmaru; it is the strongest of the ice element swords, it forms a dragon of water and ice from spiritual energy that can control the weather; ban-kai is Dai Guren Hyourinmaru, it looks like a huge bird made from ice and has three flowers with 4-petals each floating behind it; the flowers lose petals as the power of the ban-kai wanes
-Is very protective of Hinamori Momo, and warned Ichimaru that if he ever hurt her, he would kill him; even Hinamori was injured, Hitsugaya tried to kill Ichimaru but was unsuccessful
-After Aizen stabbed Hinamori Hitsugaya released his ban-kai to kill Aizen, but Aizen used the power of his zanpakutou to fool him, and mortally wounded him
-Captain Unohana was able to save his and Hinamori's life
-Is currently in the living world with the group sent to gather information on and if necessary fight the Arrancar

-Zanpakutou's name is Suzumushi; bankai is Enmakourogi, which takes away the opponents spiritual sense, sight, hearing, and sense of smell, the only way to escape it is by having hold of Suzumushi itself
-Had a best friend who wanted to become a shinigami so she could create and mantain peace; she was killed by her husband who was also a shinigami
-Became a shinigami so he could become justice and uphold the peace that his friend had wanted to create
-Befriended Komamura before they both became shinigami
-Believes that he walks the path of justice, which so far has led him to betray Soul Society with Aizen and Ichimaru

-Kyouraku calls her "Nanao-chan" even though she doesn't like it
-Sometimes carries a rule book around with her
-Went with Kyouraku and Ukitake when they went to fight Yamamoto, but his spirit pressure was so great once he released it that she collapsed and couldn't breathe; Kyouraku quickly took her to a safe place away from the battle so she would be safe
-Strict and tries to keep her extremely easy-going captain in line

-"Fights" with Ikkaku while their captains also fight, but this fighting consists of drinking sake and then doing "rock, paper, scissors" to decide who has to get more sake, or who gets higher ground, both have wounds covered with Ikkaku styptic, so they were battling at some point

-Zanpakutou's name is Tengen; bankai is Kokujoutengenmyouou, looks like an enormous samurai
-Devoted to Yamamoto because he had faith in him when no one else did; he will uphold Yamamoto's will at all cost

-Wore a mask to hide his appearance; it was broken in his fight with Zaraki, and he did not wear it again afterwards; it is unclear how many of the captains or vice-captains knew of his true appearance

Abarai Renji
-From Inuzuri, Rukongai's seventy-eighth district. The four quarters of Rukongai are each divided into 80 districts, the higher the number, the more dangerous the district.
-2066th term graduate of Shino-Reijutsuin, the Central Spiritual Arts Academy, also known as Soul Reaper Academy. Assigned to Fifth Company upon graduating, his combat ability was soon recognized and he was transferred to Eleventh Company. Promoted to Assistant Captain of Sixth Company one month ago.
-Strange eyebrows are tattoos.
-Likes taiyaki (fish-shaped pancakes filled with sweet bean jam)
-Zanpakutou's name is Zabimaru, and takes the form of a baboon with a snake as a tail; ban-kai is "Hihio Zabimaru," looks like a huge snake skeleton

Kuchiki Byakuya
-28th head of distinguished aristocratic Kuchiki family
-Wears the Kenseikan (Pull Star Silence), an ornament allowed only to nobles--a series of semi-tubes that clamp to the hair
-Wears Ginpaku Kazanohana Usuginu (Silvery-white Windflower Silk Gauze), a scarf worn by generational head of family, woven by a master weaver, the third inheritor to Kuroemon Tsujishiro. One of these costs as much as ten houses.

-Zanpakutou's name is Senbonza; ban-kai is Senbonzakura Kageyoshi, takes the form of multiple swords which all can be broken into petals and manipulated at will; also has a senkei ability for Senbonzakura Kageyoshi, similar to the bankai, but with more swords, and it sacrifices his defense capabilties
-Saved Rukia from being killed by Aizen after Aizen had taken the Hougyoku from her soul
-Wife, Hisana, was Rukia's older sister; Hisana had abandoned Rukia when she was an infant after they arrived in Soul Society together, she later married Byakuya and tried to find Rukia, but was unable to find Rukia before she died, but she asked Byakuya to find and protect her, which he promised to do; Byakuya found Rukia the next year, but instructed the others to tell her she was being adopted into the Kuchiki family because she looked like Hisana, she was not to know that she was Hisana's sister; Byakuya finally told Rukia the truth after he was seriously injured saving her from Aizen

5th division vice captain
Hinamori Momo
A sweet, gentle, and somewhat naive girl who seems entirely unsuited to be a vice-captain in the rough and dangerous world of Soul Society. Despite her cute and innocent appearance and demenour, however, she can cross swords with the best of them, and is an accomplished master of kidou.
She has idolized Aizen Sousuke since before she became his vice-captain, and holds an almost unhealthy degree of loyalty to him, particularly in times of extreme emotion.
Hinamori's best friend, however, is Hitsugaya Toushirou, captain of the Tenth Division (whom she calls "Shiro-chan" for short, much to Hitsugaya's annoyance). They have known each other since before they were shinigami, and she seems to love him as though he were her younger brother.
-Zanpakutou's name is Tobiume
-Devoted to her captain, Aizen, and would do anything for him; she was horrified when she found Aizen's body, and she was sure that Ichimaru had done it so she went after him, but Kira stopped her; later when Rangiku gave her the letter it said that it was Hitsugaya who had murdered Aizen so she went after Hitsugaya, even though they were friends, but Hitsugaya knocked her out
-Followed Hitsugaya and Rangiku to the Council 46 chambers, where, after they left, she Ichimaru and he took her to where Aizen had been hiding; Aizen then stabbed her and left her for dead
-Captain Unohana was able to save her life
-She had been used by Aizen because of her devotion to him; Kira and Renji were also manipulated by Aizen and Ichimaru
5th division captain
Aizen Sousuke
Captain of the Fifth Division. A rather unassuming individual, but one with great depth. Sousuke is a brilliant thinker and fighter--probably the second most powerful captain after Yamamoto--and is respected among shinigami for his chivalrous demeanour. He seems to be wary of Ichimaru Gin and his motives.
He acts gently toward his subordinates, particularly Hinamori Momo, his vice-captain. He recognizes the respect she has for him, and plays along with her hero-worshipping.
His zanpaku-to is the amazingly devious and powerful Kyouka Suigetsu.
-Zanpakutou's name is Kyouka Suigetsu and its ability is absolute hypnosis
-Tried to kill both Hinamori Momo, and Captain Hitsugaya
-Told Hitsugaya that he never considered anyone but Ichimaru Gin as his vice-captain
-His entire plot was formed so that he could get the Hougyoku, a mechanism created by Urahara that could tranform a Hollow into a shinigami or vice versa instantly, thus allowing the new creation to exceed the natural power limits of either a shinigami or Hollow; Urahara had hidden the Hougyoku inside of Rukia's soul, and when Aizen found this out he orchestrated everything to allow him to get the Hougyoku, and in the end he did get it
-As soon as he found out that Rukia was in the living world with the Hougyoku he killed the Central 46 Committee, and either he or one of his men stayed there acting as the committee and passing decisions; they arranged for Captain Kuchiki and Renji to apprehend Rukia in the living world, and then for her gigai to be destroyed; decided to use the Soukyoku to execute her, the intense heat from the Soukyoku would dissolve the soul around the Hougyoku; but in case that didn't work he researched Urahara's records to find a way to remove the object from the soul, which he did, and removed the Hougyoku from Rukia's soul without killing her
-Left Soul Society with Ichimaru and Tousen, though a "Negation" beam which is a method the Menos use to rescue their comrades in battle
4th division vice captain
Kotetsu Isane
As kind-hearted and mild as one would expect from the Fourth Division, but seemingly having a slightly more combative nature. She is extremely loyal to her captain, whom she idolizes, and has a sister (Kiyone) who is ranked as third seat of the Thirteenth Division. Not much else is known about her.
-Sister of Koutetsu Kiyone, 3rd seated officer (#2) of the 13th Division
-Zanpakutou's name is Itegumo
4th division captain
Unohana Retsu
A kind and peaceful woman, who is perfectly suited to be Captain of the healing-oriented Fourth Division. She seems willing to help almost anyone in need, but don't let her motherly appearance fool you; she is highly intelligent and possesses an extremely strong will.
Though possessed of a compassionate personality, Unohana ultimately remains loyal to the core principles of the Gotei 13 and Yamamoto Genryuusai, even at times when she seemingly feels that official policy is not the right course of action.
She has not engaged in any combat to date, but wields the healing zanpaku-to Minazuki as her blade of choice.
-Zanpakutou's name is Minatzuki; when released it looks like a huge one-eyed stingray and it carries the injured in its mouth and heals them
-Kind and quiet demeanor
3rd division vice captain
Kira Izuru
A thin and somewhat neurotic individual, Kira is good friends with fellow vice-captains Hinamori and Abarai. He seems a decent enough sort, but is also extremely loyal to his captain, Ichimaru Gin. This sometimes puts him in difficult positions, where he is forced to choose between loyalty to his captain and loyalty to his friends.
-Zanpakutou's name is Wabisuke; it has the power to increase the weight of anything it touches, each hit doubles the weight
-Manipulated by Ichimaru and Aizen; he fought with Rangiku and lost; he later apoligized to Rangiku about what had happened, and she forgave him and they got drunk
-In the same class at the Central Spirit Technique Institute as Renji and Momo, who were also manipulated by Aizen
3rd division captain
Ichimaru Gin
The sly-faced, perpetually smiling Ichimaru seems to be almost totally amoral, willing to injure even his own comrades if it helps him get what he wants.
Ichimaru's personality is inscrutable. It is impossible to tell if his ever-present grin is merely a facade to hide his true thoughts, or if he really does take devilish glee in the various tragedies he sets in motion.
As with most captains, Ichimaru's past is shrouded in mystery. However, he seems to have a rather strong relationship with vice-captain Matsumoto, who is probably his only true friend.
Ichimaru's zanpaku-to is Shinsou, which he uses with impressive skill, if rather indiscriminately.
-Zanpaktou's name is Shinsou; it looks like a short sword or knife, but when releases it can grow to skewer someone a great distance
-Speaks with an uncultured accent
-Has known Rangiku since they were children and he found her passed out from hunger and he offered her food
-Rukia has always had a very creepy feeling about him; she would sometimes meet him while she was walking with Byakuya; he went so far as to tease her by telling her that he could get her out of the execution; he was only kidding, but in doing so he broke her resolve

2nd division vice captain
Ohmaeda Marechiyo
Descended from one of the noble families in Soul Society. Omaeda is an enormous individual, dwarfing his petite Captain. He is also her opposite in personality, being rather a buffon and not especially bright. Not much else is known about him.
-Zanpakutou's name is Gegetsuburi, and looks like a huge flail (stick with a free-swinging spiked ball attached by a chain)
-Almost always seen eating or picking his nose
2nd division captain
Soi Fong
Captain of the Second Division, and Commander of Covert Operations and Executive Militia.
Not much is known about Soi Fong. She is from a lower noble that served the great Shihounin family, and became a comrade of Shihouin Yoruichi (former Captain of the Second Division) at a young age.
In combat, Soi Fong wields Suzumebachi, one of the more unique Zanpaku-to. She also seems to have the entire Covert Operations division at her beck and call, ready to fight at a moment's notice.
-Used to be Yoruichi's subordinate; became captain after Yoruichi abandoned Soul Society
-Zanpakutou's name is Suzumebachi; its special ability is Nigeki Kessatsu (Death in two step) which consists of "Houmonka" (Hornet's crest) which leaves a shi no ikuin (death stamp) on the target's body, and if an attack strikes the Houmonka a second time, the target will die
-Thought she had created the technique Yoruichi called "shunkou", and she planned to surprise Yoruichi with it but was instead surprised that Yoruichi already knew it and was at a more advanced stage of it than she
-Was very upset that Yoruichi had left Soul Society, and sad that she had been left behind; her sadness grew into anger, and she trained so that she could become stronger than Yoruichi, but she still ended up losing to Yoruichi in their fight
1st division vice captain
Sasakibe Choutarou
Not much is known about this man, other than his outfit, which is somewhat different and more formal than those of the other vice-captains. Judging from his appearance, face, and weapon, it is probably a safe guess that he is a sophisticated sort of man.
-Zanpakutou's name is Gonryoumaru
1st division captain
Yamamoto Genryuusai Shigekuni
Yamamoto-taicho looks like a very old man, almost after the fashion of the Taoist Immortals, but under his shinigami robes he still has a strong body that has not decayed with age. His spiritual pressure is possibly greater than any other being in Soul Society; it was enough to paralyze Ise Nanao--the Eighth Division Vice-Captain--with a mere glance. He wields Ryuujin Jakka, the strongest of all fire-type zanpaku-to. His skill in kidou is unknown, but probably as formidable as his swordsmanship, as he appears to embody the convention of the "old master."
Kyouraku Shunsui (8th Division Captain) and Ukitake Juushiro (13th Division Captain) seem to have a particularly strong relationship with Yamamoto-taicho. He mentions that they were the first graduates of his shinigami academy to rise to the rank of captain, and some clips from the anime show Yamamoto-taicho sparring with the two (and easily winning).
